Projects

A research archive built with a Rice team, then three systems I shipped: a server launcher, a database migration, and a stats pipeline.

Archives of the Impossible

Team research build · Center for the Impossible

With a Rice team sponsored by the Center for the Impossible, we turned 2,298 letters written to Whitley Strieber — accounts of claimed encounters with non-human intelligence — into an anonymized knowledge graph researchers can query.

GLiNER extracted beings, emotions, places, and vehicles. HippoRAG 2 retrieved evidence for plain-language questions, and a small interface cited the passages behind every answer.

Team: JP Babin, Grey Beaubien, Eugenia Nwogu, Auggie Schwarz, and Mac Tucker. Graduate advisor: Songyuan Sui.

Frames from the final presentation

Ask the archive. Answers cite the passages HippoRAG 2 retrieved.
Geospatial instrument. Locations kept after street-level details were redacted.
RDF2Vec clusters. Silhouette score 0.410.
t-SNE projection of the same graph.
  1. 01

    Organize

Load the plain-text letters into a secure computing environment.

  2. 02

    Schema

Label beings, emotions, places, vehicles, and the privacy fields that have to be redacted.

  3. 03

    Graph

Each letter becomes a hub node, tied to extracted entities by labeled edges.

  4. 04

    Analysis

Cluster near-duplicate entities and measure how the letters connect.

  5. 05

    Interface

A researcher asks in plain language and gets an answer grounded in cited passages.

  • Actors

    experiencer, witness

  • Beings

    non-human agent, animal

  • Signals

    sensory phenomenon, emotion

  • Time

    time period, memory gap

  • Context

    location, natural environment

  • Vehicles

    human, non-human craft

  • Aftereffects

    physical trace, interpretation

  • Privacy

    phone, street address

Example queries

10 Apr 2026

Replay of two answers from the research interface. This page does not query the letters. Identity fields were redacted before researchers saw the text.

Q: describe an event that took place in Iowa

An event that took place in Iowa involved an individual who experienced a vivid encounter on a hot, humid summer night in 1983-84. They were awakened by a whirring noise and saw an enormous disc-shaped object with a pewter color and a pale rose-mauve glow hovering above the tree-tops. The object directed a bright pulsating light toward the ground, illuminating the entire neighborhood. The individual then fell back asleep and later found themselves in a horseshoe-shaped building with large windows overlooking a dark, misty landscape filled with charred trees and a pale, eerie glow.

The research interface also returned cited passage keys for this answer. They are visible in the screenshot.

SquidServers

Co-founder & developer

SquidServers turns Minecraft server setup into five steps, so a group can be playing in under five minutes instead of fighting configuration screens.

I co-founded it and built the Electron and React app, plus the deployment path behind 5,000+ users and 5,000+ successful server launches.

Labshare

Database reorganization & migration

Labshare’s Supabase database needed a new shape. I reworked the schema, migrated every existing record onto it, and kept backups plus a separate database branch so the change could be proven before it merged.

The live data ended up aligned with the revised model, and the next migration has a safer path than a single irreversible push.

  • Reorganized the schema and migrated the existing data onto the new structure.
  • Stood up database backups and a separate branch to rehearse schema changes before merging.
  • Merged the update and aligned existing records with the revised data model.

Player Statistics Data Pipeline

Valorant stats, automated

This pipeline pulls player statistics, match histories, and rankings from the Valorant API, reshapes the JSON, and loads clean rows into SQLite.

A Discord bot sits on that database, so someone can ask for a player or a match in chat instead of opening a SQL client.

  • Retrieved player statistics, match histories, and rankings from the Valorant API.
  • Transformed JSON responses into structured records and loaded them into SQLite.
  • Built a Discord interface for the stored player and match statistics.
